
Dr. Roberto Zaldivar
Dr. Zaldivar is the Scientific Director of the Zaldivar Institute. He’s an ophthalmic surgeon, specialized in refractive and cataract surgery, and member of numerous scientific societies, including: the American Academy of Ophthalmology, member of the International Society of Refractive Surgery and member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
In 1992, he was the second surgeon in the world in receiving and utilizing innovative laser technology, such as the Excimer-Holmium laser: the first revolutionary laser to operate myopia and hyperopia (near and farsightedness). Previously, he had been part of the group in New Orleans that had treated the first four patients in the world with such laser.
Due to the significant contributions made by Dr. Zaldivar in the research and development of ophthalmic instruments, techniques and procedures both in Cataract and Refractive Surgery, he has been awarded with many prizes. He’s the first Spanish- speaking Ophthalmologist to receive the following honors:
- In 1998 the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS) honored Dr. Zaldivar with the “Lans Lecture” Award, the first non-U.S. resident specialist in receiving this prestigious award.
- In 1999, the South African Society of Ophthalmology honored Dr. Zaldivar with the Epstein Award.
- During the year 2002, the New York Academy of Medicine, honored Dr. Zaldivar with the “Robert Coles” Award.
- In the years 2002 and 2009, he was distinguished by the American Academy of Ophthalmology with the Junior and Senior Achievement Awards, respectively.
- In the year 2007, he obtained the “Innovators Lecture” award, during the XX German and International Meeting of Ophthalmic Surgeons, celebrated jointly with the American Academy of Ophthalmologists (AAO) and the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS) in Nuremburg, Germany.
- Last year (2010) the International Intraocular Implant Club (IIIC), the prestigious and one of the oldest organization of intraocular surgeons dedicated to the science and art of implantation of intraocular lenses, rewarded Dr. Roberto Zaldivar with the “Jan G.F. Worst Medal Award”.
All these recognitions honor the effort and dedication of Dr. Zaldivar in pursuit of the advancement of Ophthalmology, and they are of great importance because they have been given for the first time to a professional of Argentina’s Ophthalmology.
